Breathing Grace - What You Need More Than Your Next Breath

Wednesday, 5 November 2008 01:08 by Charles

When I don’t know what I am going to read next, I go to the book store to browse the shelves.  I look for books with interesting titles.  When I find one I will read a few pages to see if it might be of interest.   I picked this book up thinking it might be good.  I was wrong.  It was GREAT!

The author, Dr. Harry Kraus is a surgeon.  He takes the situations he sees in the operating room and uses them to illustrate principles from the Word of God.  Each chapter is short and full of penetrating insights that help you grasp God’s love and grace in a new fresh way.

He bases the book on the fact that just as we cannot survive physically without oxygen, we cannot survive spiritually without grace.   We must breathe it in and out to be healthy.  He points out that most believers are living in a state of grace debt which is similar to oxygen debt.  During a state of oxygen debt ever cell in our body demands a payment and the only currency that will work is oxygen.  During a state of grace debt every part of our soul is demanding a payment and the only currency that works is grace.

He takes this concept and expands it by looking at things like mouth to mouth resuscitation, fake breathing, spiritual emphysema, and spiritual anemia.  I learned a lot about our bodies and how they function but more importantly I was  moved to tears many times as I took a fresh look at God’s grace.

I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to appreciate God’s love in a greater way.

Thanks for the book recommendation -- I'm always on the search for good reading. I'm going to add this title to my Christmas list!
