I am not musically inclined in any way other than the fact that I can sing an Elvis song in Porky the Pig's voice, do a pretty good rendition of Elmer Fudd’s greatest Christmas hits and I am not bad at imitating Willie Nelson and Julio singing “To All the Girls I Loved Before.” Even so, I can tell when someone is singing out of tune. It is unpleasant and sometimes down right painful to those of us listening.
In his book The Divine Embrace author Ken Gire states, “The human spirit resides in us as a divine instrument with strings tuned to resonate with the rhythms of grace.” When my life is in tune with God’s will it is a beautiful thing. My life resonates with the rhythms of grace. On the other hand when I am out of tune, it is unpleasant and sometimes painful not only for me but also for those around me.
The story is told of a man who came to visit his old friend, a music teacher. As the man came in, he said, “What’s the good news today?” The old teacher was silent as he stood up and walked across the room. He picked up a small hammer and struck a tuning fork. As the note sounded throughout the room, he said, “That is ‘A.’ It is ‘A’ today; it was ‘A’ 5,000 years ago, and it will be ‘A’ 10,000 years from now. The soprano upstairs sings off-key, the tenor across the hall flats on his high notes, and the piano downstairs is out of tune.” He struck the note again and said, “That is ‘A,’ my friend, and that’s the good news for today!
There is even better news –God's word is always the same. It never changes and when we live our lives in tune with God’s word, we make beautiful music together for the rest of the world to hear.
