The Speed of Love

Theologian Kosuke Koyama – “God walks slowly because he is love.  If he is not love he would have gone much faster.  Love has its speed.  It is an inner speed.  It is a spiritual speed.  It is a different kind of  speed from the technological speed to which we are accustomed…It goes on in the depth of our life, whether we notice or not, whether we are currently hit by a storm or not, at three miles an hour.  It is the speed we walk and therefore it is the speed of love God walks.”

This weekend I spoke at Pine Cove Christian Camp in Tyler at a father/daughter weekend.  I was a replacement for John Weber.  John was the chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys.  He died suddenly of a heart attack on Thursday, November 1 last year.  Shortly after his death I was contacted by the people at Pine Cove to ask if I would speak in John's place since I had known him.

Pat and I attended John's funeral.  We have known John, his wife Carole and their five children for several years.  John’s funeral was the largest funeral I had ever attended.  It also was the longest as all his children, several ministers and Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis all paid tribute to a man who lived at the speed of love. No one looked at their watches and no one left. It was a fitting service for a man who loved the Lord and loved others.

John was always more concerned about knowing what was going on in my life than telling me what was going on in his.  He always asked about my family.  He always shared a word of encouragement with me.

I was honored to be asked to speak in his place at Pine Cove.  My prayer is that I could also follow him in his example of someone who lived at the speed of love.
